Hyunsung John Kim
John graduated from UCSC in 2007 with a B.S. in Bioinformatics. He is currently pursuing a Master's degree in the same discipline. His past research includes atomic resolution protein model quality assessment, searching for binding motifs between aromatic amino acid residues, high bandwidth web conferencing for academic use and integration of technology into pedagogical settings. Integrations of viral DNA into the human genome is speculated to increase risk of carcinoma development with certain viruses. Using Human Papillomavirus (HPV) as a model virus, integration sites are mapped through highly parallel next generation paired-end sequencing. Bioinformatic analysis promises to reveal primary or secondary structure motifs which can shed light onto the viral integration mechanisms.
